Resurgent Nationalism: Is Law an Answer?

GPI Seminar Series: Dr. Iavor Rangelov

Nationalism is on the march in many parts of the world. Whatever form it takes, this nationalist mobilization undermines the legitimacy of political orders and strains the domestic and international legal arrangements that underpin them. The seminar will discuss the tensions between nationalism and the rule of law at the current juncture and ask whether they could be harnessed for any productive purposes, exploring the role of law in managing and transforming nationalism.

Dr Iavor Rangelov is Global Security Research Fellow at the London School of Economics & Political Science and author of Nationalism and the Rule of Law: Lessons from the Balkans and Beyond (CUP 2014).
