In a series of brief lectures, Global Policy introduces some of the most important challenges faced by the world today. Leading academics provide insights into these global collective action problems: what these issues are, what attempts have been made to remedy them, and where we should turn next to find solutions. You can find all the videos on the left hand side of this page.
In this first brief lecture Professor David Held of Durham University discusses the existing frameworks of global governance. The world of 1945 in which the United Nations was created, has fundamentally changed. New challenges and risks present themselves, power dynamics are shifting. The study of global policy and the work of this journal is centred around analysing the success and failures of these institutions of global governance. And it raises the questions: under what circumstances will these big issues be addressed by human kind, now and in the future?
