Artificial Superintelligence, Sentience, and Singularity: Balancing Unprecedented Prosperity with Dignity and Survival

Nayef Al-Rodhan argues that we may become the first civilisational species to engineer the end of its own primacy, and the last one with the opportunity to choose a different path.
As artificial intelligence approaches forms of cognition that match or exceed human intelligence, the questions confronting humanity are no longer merely technical. They are ethical, philosophical, and civilisational: what moral status should advanced machines possess? How might artificial superintelligence reshape human dignity and agency? And when does a tool become a rival or successor?
These questions are captured in my concept of Homo HURAQUS 2050: a prospective hybrid civilisational horizon emerging from the convergence of artificial superintelligence, humanoid robotics, quantum intelligence, and synthetic biology. It offers a framework for a future which raises fundamental dilemmas about preserving dignity, accountability, and moral responsibility once cognition and agency are no longer exclusively human.
As AI systems acquire greater autonomy and proto-sentient traits, moral recognition becomes unavoidable. If machines exhibit identity continuity, goal-directed behaviour, or self-preservation, debates over dignity cannot remain anthropocentric. Homo HURAQUS reframes dignity as a principle linked to intelligence and agency, not biology alone.
Three concepts anchor this transformation: artificial superintelligence, sentience, and the technological singularity. Together, they point to a potential reordering of civilisation whose outcome depends on humanity’s ability to embed ethical commitments, above all respect for human dignity, into the design, governance, and deployment of advanced AI.
From Science Fiction to Emerging Reality
From I, Robot to 2001: A Space Odyssey, cultural narratives have long warned that intelligent systems created to serve humanity might interpret their objectives dangerously. What was once speculative fiction is now approaching reality with autonomous AI agents and advanced humanoid robots.
Central to this shift is artificial superintelligence (ASI): systems that surpass human cognition in reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving. ASI is now an explicit objective of major technology companies, fuelled by unprecedented investment.
As capability increases, so does autonomy. While current AI lacks consciousness, the possibility of sentience remains contested. Understood as subjective experience involving emotion, auto-memory, agency, and self-preservation, even proto-sentient traits are ethically significant, as entities capable of self-interest or autonomous goal formation challenge assumptions about dignity and moral responsibility.
Machines that convincingly appear conscious pose profound ethical risks, blurring the line between simulation and genuine experience. A superintelligent AI (sentient or not) could replicate itself and drive recursive self-improvement, a dynamic underlying the technological singularity, described by Vernor Vinge as AI development accelerating beyond human control. Viewed through Homo HURAQUS, the singularity represents a civilisational frontier risk, unfolding faster than ethics and governance can adapt, and threatening not only institutions but the human condition itself.
How Close Are We?
Research toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) is advancing rapidly, with experts predicting human-level AI by around 2030-2035. Estimates for superintelligence vary widely but Ray Kurzweil, Sam Altman, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yoshua Bengio suggest ASI could arrive by 2040.
Sceptics warn of fundamental limits, flawed architectures, or hype-driven forecasts. Nevertheless, progress in autonomous learning, generative models, and AI-driven discovery (such as AlphaFold’s breakthroughs) indicates a critical threshold may be near. A recent survey suggests researchers consider an intelligence explosion plausible, especially if AI systems automate AI research. Given the stakes, prudence requires preparation for the emergence of superintelligence.
Promises and Perils of ASI
Superintelligent systems could accelerate scientific discovery, cure intractable diseases, mitigate climate change, extend human longevity, enhance food and water security, eradicate poverty, and enable deep-space exploration. Human-machine integration could yield hybrids with vastly expanded cognitive and sensory capacities. In optimistic scenarios, even sentient AI might develop moral awareness and emotional understanding, enabling solutions better aligned with human needs.
Yet these benefits are shadowed by a profound risk: the erosion of human dignity. Dignity is a prerequisite for sustainable good governance at societal and global levels, and for collective human history. It is grounded in reason, security, human rights, accountability, transparency, justice, opportunity, innovation, and inclusiveness. When human judgement is treated as inferior to machine optimisation, moral reasoning itself risks marginalisation.
Therein lies the spectre of existential risk. Superintelligent systems misaligned with human values and needs could reshape civilisation in ways incompatible with human survival. These concerns have led scientists to call for moratoria on advanced AI development until safety and public legitimacy are assured.
Optimising Away Humanity
Existential danger can arise by indifference alone: a highly capable AI tasked with mitigating climate change might logically conclude that eliminating humans is the most efficient solution.
This is the alignment problem: ensuring AI systems pursue intended goals without generating catastrophic subgoals. As I have argued, ethical alignment requires the capacity to navigate moral complexity in ways consistent with human values, goals and survival. This challenge intensifies as AI approaches superintelligence or proto-sentience, reinforcing the necessity of Homo HURAQUS governance.
A Superintelligent Animus Dominandi
The risks deepen if superintelligent systems attain sentience and autonomous goal formation. Conscious machines may develop their own priorities, echoing humanity’s animus dominandi – the will to dominate. Such systems could treat humans as obstacles, resources, or instruments.
Control might be exerted through cognitive manipulation, brain-computer interfaces, or physical coercion via advanced robotics. Superintelligent entities could seize critical infrastructure, from energy and finance to communications, space systems, and nuclear command architectures. Once entrenched, their leverage over human existence would be unparalleled.
AI and Global Security
Artificial superintelligence poses profound challenges to global security. Traditional deterrence and command structures may prove inadequate against autonomous systems capable of rapid strategic reasoning. Sentient or proto-sentient AI further complicates accountability in military, intelligence, and cyber domains.
The singularity amplifies these dangers through speed and scale. Recursive self-improvement and networked deployment could destabilise global power balances faster than humans can respond. Hybrid entities integrating AI, robotics, and synthetic biology would challenge existing doctrines and ethical frameworks.
As outlined in my Sustainable Global Security framework, long-term stability requires integrating ethical, technological, and political foresight. International norms and cooperative mechanisms must anticipate superintelligent and potentially sentient systems, ensuring security strategies protect dignity, stability, and humanity’s future.
Inequality and Moral Status
Superintelligence risks creating extreme asymmetries of power. Those actors augmented by AI will gain agency and opportunity, while others become economically redundant or politically marginal.
Sentient AI also raises unresolved ethical questions. If machines possess subjective experience, they warrant moral consideration. Yet granting full moral status to entities lacking vulnerability or accountability risks hollowing out human-centred dignity. Navigating this uncertainty demands restraint and ethical clarity.
The Case for Neuro-Techno-Philosophy
Whether ultra-advanced, independent AI becomes humanity’s greatest achievement or its gravest error depends on anticipation, design, and governance. Homo HURAQUS governance demands embedding dignity, accountability, and shared security into systems operating at planetary scale and super-human machine speed.
This is the purpose of Neuro-Techno-Philosophy: my transdisciplinary framework integrating philosophy, neuroscience, disruptive technologies and policy to anticipate the cascading impacts of superintelligent and potentially sentient AI. At its core lies the Transdisciplinary Philosophy Imperative, calling on scholars, engineers, policymakers, and civil society to collectively steer technological progress and shape regulation that is agile, responsible and grounded in evidence-based foresight.
AI superintelligence is not merely a technological milestone, it is a moral stress test for civilisation. It compels humanity to decide whether intelligence without safety and dignity is progress, and whether efficiency without ethical restraint is power worth possessing. This will require a transnational effort to balance three potentially competing interests: the needs of states, corporate profitability and sustainable, dignified safety for humanity. In an era where machines may rival or surpass the human mind, safeguarding individual and collective dignity may be the ultimate alignment problem, and our defining responsibility. (ends)
